Shingles is a painful and blistering infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chickenpox), which affects the nerves. It typically occurs in individuals with weakened immune systems and, if not treated early, can lead to long-lasting nerve pain. Therefore, the treatment of shingles is crucial for the course of the disease and the patient’s quality of life. The main goals of treatment are to stop the virus from multiplying, alleviate symptoms, and prevent potential complications.
Starting shingles treatment as early as possible significantly improves its effectiveness. The most ideal treatment process involves initiating antiviral medications within the first 72 hours after symptoms begin. Antiviral drugs stop the virus from spreading, helping the blisters heal more quickly and reducing the risk of severe nerve pain. In addition, pain relievers, medications that suppress nerve pain, and topical creams are also included in the treatment plan. These supportive treatments are especially important to prevent postherpetic neuralgia, which may occur after shingles.
During the treatment process, the patient should rest, keep the affected area clean and dry, and avoid stress factors to speed up recovery. The blisters should not be popped, as this reduces the risk of infection. Additionally, paying attention to a diet that supports the immune system and maintaining a proper sleep routine will positively contribute to the healing process. The shingles vaccine is recommended, particularly for individuals over the age of 50, as a preventive measure. The vaccine both reduces the risk of developing shingles and helps make the disease less severe if contracted.
Since each individual’s situation may vary, it is essential to follow the guidance of a dermatologist or infectious diseases specialist. Uninformed home remedies or delayed treatments can prolong the recovery process and lead to painful complications. Therefore, seeking professional support immediately upon noticing shingles symptoms is the best step for healthy and lasting recovery.
