Callus Treatment

A corn is a thickened, hardened, and sometimes painful layer of skin that develops due to constant friction and pressure. Corns are most commonly seen on the soles of the feet, toes, or hands. They can negatively impact daily life quality and may also be aesthetically bothersome. Therefore, corn treatment is essential both to alleviate pain and to maintain skin health. The success of treatment is directly related to early intervention, accurate diagnosis, and a regular care process.

The first and most fundamental step in corn treatment is eliminating the friction or pressure causing the corn. Changing unsuitable shoes, such as narrow, hard, or high-heeled ones, and opting for soft-soled, supportive footwear can speed up the healing process. Additionally, individuals who have to stand for long periods are advised to use orthopedic insoles or silicone pads designed to protect the corn. These measures help prevent the corn from worsening and protect the existing lesions from deepening.

In more advanced cases of corns, topical treatments come into play. Corn creams or patches containing salicylic acid, available over-the-counter or by prescription at pharmacies, gradually soften the thickened skin and help return it to its natural state. However, these products can irritate the skin, so they should only be used under the guidance of a professional. Especially in individuals with high skin sensitivity, such as diabetic patients, improper treatment can increase the risk of infection. Therefore, the treatment process should always be monitored by a dermatologist.

In some cases, the corn’s root may have deepened, and home remedies might not be sufficient. In such cases, professional interventions by dermatologists may be required. The corn layer is carefully removed using curettage (scraping), or laser treatment may be applied if necessary. Without proper aftercare and protection, the corn may recur, so it is crucial to take care even after the treatment process.

Corn treatment should not only address the existing hardened tissue but also be planned to prevent recurrence. Proper shoe selection, maintaining foot hygiene, and regularly using moisturizers play a significant role in maintaining healthy skin. Simple precautions taken before the corn progresses to an advanced stage can help eliminate pain and restore the skin’s appearance.
