Skin cancer is a disease that arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of skin cells and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. Prolonged sun exposure, genetic predisposition, having fair skin, and a weakened immune system are important factors in the development of skin cancer. However, due to medical advancements, skin cancer treatment has shown highly successful results with early diagnosis. Therefore, starting an effective treatment process under specialist supervision as soon as the diagnosis is made is crucial to stopping the progression of the disease.
The treatment method for skin cancer depends on the type, stage, degree of spread, and the location of the lesion. One of the most common treatment methods is surgical intervention. Basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, diagnosed at an early stage, can generally be completely removed with surgical procedures performed under local anesthesia. Removing the entire lesion reduces the risk of recurrence. In areas like the face, where aesthetic concerns are important, more delicate surgical techniques are applied, and when necessary, plastic surgery support is provided to minimize scarring.
As an alternative to surgery, methods such as cryotherapy (freezing treatment), radiotherapy (radiation therapy), photodynamic therapy, or topical chemotherapy creams may also be used for some types of skin cancer. These treatments can be highly effective, especially for patients who are not suitable for surgery or are elderly. In more aggressive types, such as melanoma, systemic treatments, such as immunotherapy or targeted therapies, may be used. These treatments strengthen the body’s immune system, enabling more effective combat against cancerous cells.
Skin cancer treatment is not solely limited to medical intervention; for the success of the treatment process, patients should also reconsider their lifestyles. Sun protection, regular skin check-ups, healthy eating, and stress management positively affect the recovery process. Even after treatment, regular doctor visits are essential to ensure the early detection of any new risky lesions that may appear on the skin.
Skin cancer is a disease that can be completely controlled with early diagnosis and proper treatment. Taking every change you notice on your skin seriously and consulting a dermatologist is crucial for your health. Remember, timely intervention saves lives and restores your skin health.
